BIRR ATHLETIC CLUB 5K
Birr Ac hosted the final race of the Offaly Athletics 5k Road Race Series on the August Bank Holiday Friday evening. The race coincides with Birr Vintage Week and the carnival atmosphere added to the event.
368 athletes took on the 5k course on a very warm evening. The course had a good balance of drags and level ground with a nice downhill finish. Birr Ac hosted an excellent event with plenty of marshals and supported along the race route and finish area.
Liam Brady (Tullamore Harriers) was a clear winner with an great time of 15.14, followed by series leader Mick Fogarty of Ferbane Ac and Tom Lupton (Portlaoise Ac) in 3rd place was overall.
Fastest lady was Sharon Cleere with Denise Egan (Ferbane Ac) in 2nd and Caroline Donellan (Edenderry Ac) 3rd.

The Offaly 5k Road Race Series has now concluded for another year with the finale in Birr last weekend. The 2019 5k race series has been a complete success with a great increase in entries in each race from previous years. There were 8 races this year and each event was of very high standard . While most of the competitors were from the athletic clubs in Offaly, there were runners from surrounding clubs too.
Popupraces managed the online entry and results for each race and provided an excellent service. The races for 2019 5k series were:
Ballyskenach ac with 472 entries
Banagher ac with 300 entries
Birr ac with 365 entries
Clara ac with 395 entries
Ferbane ac with 380 entries
Naomh Ciaran ac with 267 entries
Naomh Mhuire ac with 364 entries
Tullamore Harriers ac with 587 entries
In November the winners in each age category will receive medals and trophies at the annual Offaly Athletics Awards Ceremony. The awards will be presented to 1st, 2nd and 3rd in junior, senior, o40, o45, o50, o60 and o70 for both male and female, plus overall team prizes. Athletes must have competed in at least 5 out of the 8 races and overall placing calculated on the best 5 results.
Well done to everyone who competed in the series and huge congratulations to each athletic club on both hosting a 5k race and also supporting the other clubs.
